Team dynamics, also known as group dynamics, is how
individuals behave, interact, communicate, and collaborate. It’s how they show
up, treat each other, and work together. Team dynamics can be positive or
negative and can be a predictor of effectiveness (Bennett, 2021).
A team with positive group dynamics tends to have team
members who trust each other. They can work towards collective decisions and
they are held accountable for outcomes. A team with good group dynamics may be
constructive and productive, and it may demonstrate mutual understanding and
self-corrective behavior. On the other hand, poor group dynamics can be
disruptive to successful decision-making and work outcomes.
Group dynamics matter because they impact things like
creativity, productivity, and effectiveness. Since group work is integral to
organizations, for business leaders, addressing group dynamics can lead to
better work outcomes, customer satisfaction, and an improved bottom
line (University, 2017).
Dimensions of team dynamics
The researchers have focused on the following key
factors to deal with because of their importance in effective teamwork;

Team cognition focuses on team decision-making and how teams evaluate situations (Cooke, Gorman & Winner, 2007).
Team cohesion
Team cohesion refers to the social connections or bonding that occurs between team members. Motivational factors that create these social bonds between team members tend to increase team productivity (Beale et al, 2003).
Team conflict occurs when there are disagreements between team members in terms concerning tasks and also conflict within relationships between the team.
When viewed from an international perspective, it is prudent
that team dynamics such as cognition, cohesion, and team conflict are important
factors in determining how successfully teams perform, whether it is a small
team within the same country or around the world.
Overcome negative team dynamics in the international
context
Nowadays, many companies rely on employees around the world,
leveraging their diversity and local expertise to gain a competitive edge.
However, Geography dispersed teams face a big challenge: physical separation
and cultural differences can create social distance, or lack of emotional
connection, that leads to misunderstandings and misconduct.
To mitigate the social distance and to manage the team
effectively, the following components need to be taken into consideration by
global leaders;
- Structure: If
a team is made up of groups with different views about their relative
power, the leader should connect frequently with those who are farthest
away and emphasize unity.
- Process: Meeting
processes should allow for informal interactions that build empathy.
- Language: Everyone,
regardless of language fluency, should be empowered to speak up.
- Identity: Team
members must be active cultural learners and teachers to understand one
another’s identity and avoid misinterpreting behaviors.
- Technology. When
choosing between videoconferencing, e-mail, and other modes of
communication, leaders should ask themselves if the real-time conversation
is desirable, if their message needs reinforcement, and if they are opting
for the technology, they want others to use.
