An Overview of Boss Vs Leader

Figure 1(Hinde, 2016).

The words “boss” and “leader” are often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. Certainly, a boss can be a leader and a leader can be a boss, but high leadership skills are important for both.

A Boss is a person who is in charge of a worker, group, or organization (Oxford, n.d.). A leader is a person who leads his followers and guides them in different matters. On the other hand, a boss is someone who is the owner of the business and in charge of the workplace (Ranjitha, 2022).

The responsibilities of a Boss include but are not limited to creating goals, Organizing, Making Pans, Delegating, etc, while the responsibilities of a Leader include Creating visions, Innovating, inspiring action, developing culture, and empowering others, etc.

Being a boss or a leader has nothing to do with one’s title or position. Many bosses are not leaders, and many leaders do so without the title of “Boss”. Leadership is a practice – and when you master the skills to effectively lead, you can make a positive change and influence those around you even if you aren’t officially “the boss.”

Narrative differences between a boss and a leader are as follows;

  • The Boss gives answers, but the leader seeks solutions.
  • A Boss expects big results, but a leader is generous with praise.
  • A boss counts value, but a leader creates value.
  • A leader creates more leaders
  • Boss dominates, but a leader collaborates
  • The Boss speaks, but a leader connects

In conclusion, the role of being a leader and NOT just a Boss is something you embrace mentally and emotionally that inspires your company and employees to greater heights. To move towards a positive impact on the team as a leader, you should connect to the employees and look forward to achieving a concerted effort in achieving the tasks of your organization.
