HRM & Performance Appraisal Process

The real asset of a company is not its infrastructure nor it is the profits, it is its employees who work enthusiastically for the company (Sharma, n.d.). Performance Appraisal is the systematic process of evaluating individual job performance as a basis for making objective personnel decisions. Performance here refers to the degree of achievement of the tasks that make up an individual's job. It indicates how well an individual is fulfilling the job demands (Gill, 2016). It is the examination of an employee’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of the job.

  • Feedback
  • Evaluate and record performance

Critical Purposes of Performance Appraisal in HRM

  • Ensure employees feel value
  • Establishing goals
  • Resolve problems
  • Maintain positive managerial relationships
  • Current project and day to day task check-in
  • Assess opportunities for promotion, advancement and raise
  • Understanding training needs (Chrisos, 2020).

The purpose of performance appraisal feels obvious to make sure that employees are meeting the standard set out for the position they were hired for. The purpose of performance appraisals including making sure that management is working well in managing employee expectations and career paths (Chrisos, 2020).

The evaluation of the performance and personality of each employee is done by his immediate superior or HR manager. Various rating techniques are employed for comparing individual employees in a group in terms of personal qualities or deficiencies and the requirements of their respective jobs.

Process of Performance Appraisal

  • Establishing standards
  • Communicating standards to employee
  •  Measuring actual performance
  • Comparing actual with standards
  • Discussing reports with employees
  • Taking corrective action

Conclusion

Performance appraisal plays a vital role to enhance the efficiency of employees and it helps to improve the performance of employees. Its helps to employees do a better job by clarifying what is expected of them and It’s provided an opportunity for employees to express themselves on performance related issues. Using better performance appraisal process will make the high productivity from the employees.
