Virtual Interviews in HRM

Figure 1 (Sorbetto, 2020)

In the current context, most people are working from home, some with limited space, and often balancing work with increased care or homeschooling responsibilities. High-speed broadband connections and applications like Skype, MS Teams, Zoom, and plenty of others haven’t just allowed people to get in touch with each other for the sake of socializing, but they have also enabled companies to recruit the best talent out there.

These days more and more interviews are conducted virtually with potential employees.

An online interview or a digital interview is an interview conducted remotely through an online chat, video, or audio platform, which is mainly defined by the type of technology or platform used to conduct the interview (Heaslip, 2022).

Nowadays, whether the pros and cons of virtual interviews have sparked heated arguments and drawn public attention. Many people firmly believe that virtual interviews are much better while others argue that there are many drawbacks to them. After thorough consideration of all relevant pros and cons, I strongly believe that virtual interviews are better.

On the overall, the following Advantages and Disadvantages can be quoted to justify the public views of the virtual interviews (Pierce, 2022);

Advantages;

  • Lower Costs
  • Saving time
  • Screening remote candidates
  • Greater scheduling flexibility
  • Assess communication skills
  • Less pressure on candidates
  • Decision-makers can re-view the video

 Disadvantages

  • Internet connection issues
  • Lack of Knowledge of the IT systems
  • Poor video quality
  • Response time limitation
  • Potential fraud
  • Background noise or distractions
  • Missing non-verbal cues
Conclusion

In conclusion, considering all the pros and cons outlined above, virtual interviews are great, because they can help companies recruit the best talent at less cost in an effective time. However, virtual interviews can serve the best to employers and employees, only if they both are well aware of the purpose of the interview by knowing what needs to be done from each and every end.
